Keep in mind that some counselors operate on a session by session basis, while other counselors may operate within packages.  It is important to ask the counselor you are working with what they recommend.  Obviously, at Hope Relentless, we would love the opportunity to work with you and help you marriage, but we also recognize there are times where we may not be the best fit for your relationships and your areas of concern.  That is ok, the important thing is that you find some one you can work with.  With that said, we typically encourage couples to plan for at least four sessions at a time.  Our most common recommendation is 12 sessions.

The reason we recommend 12 sessions is to allow for our marriage counselor to best understand the underlying issue that is hurting a relationship. The counselor helps each couple identify negative patterns.  This increases awareness.  But this is just the beginning of the real transformative work to be done.

We recommend 12 sessions, because it allows the couple and the counselor to work on replacing the old negative patterns with new positive patterns.  It is Hope Relentless mission to equip marriages to thrive in the short term, but also in the long term.  The best way to do this is to move beyond awareness of the problems and actually into transformation.  Transformation means we have actually replaced the old negative patterns with new positive patterns. The reality is this transformation takes time, but it is worth it.

Does Insurance Cover Marriage or Couples Counseling?

The short answer is no. Medical insurance does not typically cover couples counseling.

Medical insurance does typically cover individual therapy or individual counseling, but it is incredibly rare for health insurance to cover marriage or couples counseling. Depending on health insurance policies individual counseling may have a copay or a per session amount contribution.  It is best to call your medical insurance provider and get a better understanding on how your particular health insurance policy works.

Keep in mind when using medical insurance to cover the cost of individual therapy or counseling, the sessions may become a part of your medical record.  Often times insurance requires the counselor to diagnose a patient according to the current DSM textbook. Common disorders that may be diagnosed are depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder etc.

Hope Relentless does not diagnose clients and as a result does not currently accept health insurance for couples of individual sessions.

Many clients would like to see a counselor and not have the meetings recorded as part of their medical history.  If that is the case you can be a self pay client and not involve your insurance in the therapy process.

Why are individual therapy sessions covered by medical insurance but couples or marriage counseling is not?

Individual counseling is often covered by medical insurance, because individual counseling in considered mental health and therefore "medically necessary". Mental health falls under the health insurance umbrella and is typically covered.

But couples counseling is relational and does not currently fall under medical or mental health because it is not considered medically necessary.  That is why health insurance will often cover individual counseling or therapy but not couples or marriage counseling. For couples counseling most counselors are aware of this distinction and can provide affordable counseling options for you.
