Playing a sport together is great for a marriage until the scorekeeping follows you home. Anyone who has played a competitive game with their spouse knows how fast a point can turn into a point of view.

I ran track at UCLA, and I used to fight to be right. My wife jokes I should have been an attorney. I'd win the argument and lose the connection every time. Four patterns do most of that damage, and each one has a better replacement.

The Four Horsemen and What Replaces Them

1

Criticism becomes a gentle start-up

Name the situation, say how you feel, and ask for what you'd like. It's the Proactive Start: when this happens, I feel this, moving forward I'd appreciate that.

2

Contempt becomes appreciation and respect

Eye rolls and sarcasm tell your spouse they're beneath you. Build the reverse habit. Say what you respect, out loud and often.

3

Defensiveness becomes taking responsibility

Look for your piece, even if it's small. Owning it first lowers the temperature faster than any explanation.

4

Stonewalling becomes self-soothing and returning

Going silent protects you and leaves your spouse alone. Call a timeout, calm down, and come back at the time you named.

Start with the one you recognize in yourself, not the one you see in your spouse. Naming your partner's patterns misses the point, because you can only change your own. It's a guide, not a law.

What This Looks Like With Us

Built around your real week

We coach couples online or at our Chandler office, and we help you set up habits that fit the schedule you actually have.

Both of you, every time

We don't offer individual sessions. Each of you owns your own side, and both of you grow at the same time. Nobody is the project.

Coached by someone who's been there

You'll work with Sarah-Gayle or me, matched on your consultation. Sarah-Gayle holds a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Azusa Pacific, and works here as a coach, not a clinician. I'm an ordained minister. We've been married more than twenty years and have coached thousands of couples.

Coaching, not therapy. We don't diagnose, we don't treat mental health conditions, and we don't bill insurance. Both partners come to every session, and we don't offer individual work. If what you need is licensed clinical care, we'll tell you and help you find it.

Questions Couples Ask

Is a little competition between us a problem?

No. Playful competition can be healthy. The line is when winning matters more than the connection. If the scoreboard comes home with you, that's the pattern worth looking at.

How do I know which of the four patterns is mine?

Ask yourself which one shows up when you feel most stressed. You may have a favorite. We help each of you name your own pattern honestly, without comparing, then work on the replacement.

What if the contempt is already in the marriage?

Contempt is the heaviest of the four, and it can be turned around. It starts with rebuilding appreciation, a little at a time. If what you need is licensed clinical care, we'll tell you and help you find it.
