Whitman Park, at 1750 N Grand in Mesa, is a roughly 10-acre neighborhood park with a lighted basketball court, volleyball courts and a ramada. It is the kind of place where a lot of ordinary life happens.

Ordinary life in a marriage includes a common trap: "I'll do my part when they do theirs." It sounds fair. In practice it creates a standoff, because each person waits for the other to move first. We teach couples to spot the "if" and replace it.

The "If You Will" Trap: Four Ways Out

Waiting for your spouse to go first keeps both of you stuck.

The "If You Will" Trap The standoff I will, if you will Both waiting. Nobody moves. The way out I will I will Two people each take a step. Spot the if. Rewrite it. Do it without announcing it.

Download the one-page worksheet (PDF) and fill it in together.

1

Spot the "if"

Listen for it in your own thinking: "I'll apologize if they do," or "I'll try if they try."

2

Rewrite it as "I will"

Take the same step without the condition. Make it about your side, your attitude and your actions.

3

Do it without announcing it

Skip the speech about how generous you are being. Just follow through, quietly and consistently.

4

Check in together

After a few weeks, compare notes with kindness. Each of you can name what you tried and how it landed.

When both of you stop waiting, things start to move.

What This Looks Like With Us

Built around your real week

Sessions happen at our Chandler office or online. We help you build habits that fit the schedule you actually have.

Both of you, every time

We don't offer individual sessions. Each of you owns your own side, and both of you grow at the same time. Nobody is the project.

Coached by someone who's been there

You'll work with Sarah-Gayle or me, matched on your consultation. Sarah-Gayle holds a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Azusa Pacific, and works here as a coach, not a clinician. I'm an ordained minister. We've been married more than twenty years and have coached thousands of couples.

Coaching, not therapy. We don't diagnose, we don't treat mental health conditions, and we don't bill insurance. Both partners come to every session, and we don't offer individual work. If what you need is licensed clinical care, we'll tell you and help you find it.
