Hope Relentless
Marriage Counselor Near Carriage Lane Park in Mesa
A clear picture of the habits you each bring to a conversation. An honest, blame-free look at what those habits cost and what they add. A marriage where both of you grow at the same time. Our office is in Chandler, about eight minutes from Carriage Lane Park, and we also meet online.
30 minutes, free, no obligation. Both of you on the call.
Something small happens and a few minutes later you're both feeling misunderstood, frustrated and disrespected. Neither of you meant to get there. That's usually a pattern, not a character flaw.
The tempting move is to name your spouse's pattern. It completely misses the point. You can't change theirs. You can only change yours.
So we start with a short exercise, and it's about you, not them.
A Two-Column Look at Your Own Patterns
Each of you does this separately, on paper, before you share.
Write two healthy patterns you show
From the healthy list: I-statements, ownership, curiosity, benefit of the doubt, calm, staying in the present, receiving influence.
Write two unhealthy patterns you show
From the unhealthy list: you-statements, blame, assumptions, absolutes like always and never, bringing up the past, avoiding, defensiveness.
Name the cost and the gain
What does your unhealthy pattern cost the connection? What does your healthy one add? Be specific.
Share, with humility
Be curious. Humility meets humility. As each of you takes ownership, you make the room safe for the other.
Naming your partner's patterns instead of your own is the one move that breaks the exercise. Keep it about you.

Questions Couples Ask
How far is your office from Carriage Lane Park?
About eight minutes by car, roughly 4 miles, at typical traffic, mostly on the 101. Our office is in Chandler at 3075 W Ray Rd #200, not in Mesa. We also meet online.
Isn't it more helpful to point out what my spouse does?
It feels that way, but it backfires. You can't change your spouse's patterns, only your own. When you own yours, you create the safety that lets your spouse do the same.
What if we both find we have a lot of unhealthy patterns?
Then you're honest, and that's a good start. Most couples find a mix. The point isn't a score. It's choosing which healthy pattern to practice first.
